GHG Environmental regulation(Domestic)

In January 2019, the government announced a plan to leap forward as a leading country in the hydrogen economy through the “Hydrogen Economy Activation Roadmap.” This roadmap also includes a plan to foster hydrogen fuel cell ships as a promising future item in the shipbuilding industry.
For coastal vessels, we plan to complete verification of fuel cell systems for vessels by 2022 and begin commercialization through demonstration from 2025, while for ocean-going vessels, we plan to pursue technology development and infrastructure simultaneously, with the goal of applying them to vessels in 2030.
The “Act on the Promotion of Development and Distribution of Environmentally Friendly Ships” (Eco-Friendly Ship Act), which came into effect on January 1, 2020, aims to contribute to the national economy by promoting the sustainable development of the shipbuilding and shipping industry and creating a clean marine environment. Environmentally friendly ships include ships powered by liquefied natural gas, electric energy, and fuel cell propulsion ships powered by hydrogen.
The
「First Basic Plan for the Promotion of Development and Distribution of Eco-Friendly Ships」
, jointly announced by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in December 2020, includes a strategy to secure carbon-free ship technology at an early stage through the development of core equipment technologies such as hydrogen and ammonia fuel cells, as well as fuel storage tanks and fuel supply and propulsion systems.
And in order to implement the established basic plan each year, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries establishes and implements the
‘Eco-friendly Ship Distribution Implementation Plan’
every year. In addition, the government has established the ‘National Eco-friendly Ship Certification System’ to commercialize domestic eco-friendly ship technology and lay the foundation for overseas expansion, and is supporting domestic companies’ entry into the global market.
Among eco-friendly ship technologies, fuel cell ships in particular are still in their initial stages of technology in Korea, and since system configurations vary depending on the type of fuel and fuel cell used, it is necessary to design the most suitable ship for the characteristics of each ship type.
